Turfites across Guyana are preparing for a significant day of horse racing on Sunday, July 5, 2026, as the Bush Lot United Turf Club hosts the CARICOM Cup Horse Race Meet. This event will feature 11 races with a total prize pool exceeding G$15 million in cash and corporate incentives. The highlight of the event will be a race between reigning national champion Dataman and former titleholder Olympic Kremlin, both of whom have confirmed their participation. This race is seen as a crucial preparation for both stables ahead of the 2026 Guyana Cup, which will take place at the Rising Sun Turf Club on August 23.

In basketball, Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Basketball Team has begun its training for the upcoming FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers, which will be hosted in Guyana from July 8–12. The training camp commenced on Monday under the guidance of newly appointed Head Coach Alan Walls at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Coach Walls, who has experience managing national teams across multiple countries, emphasized the importance of establishing a disciplined and competitive mindset among the players during this preparation phase.

Additionally, the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) and the East Coast Basketball League (ECBL) are launching the East Coast District’s Inter-Ward Try-Out Tournament at the Plaisance Community Centre court. Scheduled to start at 18:00 hrs, this tournament will feature elite players from the coastal region, competing for a spot on the East Coast Demerara team, which will represent the district in the 2026 GABA Inter-Ward Tournament in August.

In cricket, Shaqkere Parris led the West Indies Academy to a 76-run victory over the Sri Lanka Emerging XI, scoring 177 runs in a One-Day international series. Meanwhile, in the opening Test match against the West Indies, Sri Lanka’s captain Dhananjaya de Silva scored a century, helping his team reach a total of 308 runs after an early collapse.
