Guyana: Guyana to Nominate Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett for UN Secretary-General

President Irfaan Ali of Guyana announced on Friday that Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, the former Foreign Affairs Minister, will be nominated for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). This decision reflects Guyana’s increasing international profile and its commitment to enhancing the multilateral system amid complex global challenges.

Rodrigues-Birkett, aged 52, currently serves as Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN and has previously held the position of Director at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). She was also the Foreign Minister of Guyana from 2018 to 2015. President Ali stated that the nomination was made after careful consideration and consultations with various colleagues.

In the race for the UN Secretary-General position, Rodrigues-Birkett will compete against four other nominees, which include two former presidents and a vice president. President Ali emphasized that Rodrigues-Birkett’s leadership during Guyana’s tenure on the UN Security Council from 2024 to 2025, along with the country’s emerging role as a significant global voice, were key factors in the nomination.

Ali expressed confidence in Rodrigues-Birkett’s qualifications, stating that she possesses the necessary experience, expertise, judgment, and diplomatic skills to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of the Secretary-General. He noted that Guyana’s successful election to the UN Security Council and its performance during its term demonstrated the country’s capability to provide leadership on the global stage.

Throughout its tenure on the Security Council, Guyana has consistently advocated for peace, dialogue, and respect for international law, contributing to discussions on pressing international issues. The current nominees for the UN Secretary-General position also include Michelle Bachelet Jeria from Chile, Rafael Mariano Grossi from Argentina, Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis from Costa Rica, and Macky Sall from Senegal.
