Guyana: Guyana, Barbados Ready to Assist Earthquake-Devastated Venezuela

President Irfaan Ali of Guyana announced early Thursday that the country is prepared to assist Venezuela in the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes that occurred on Wednesday. In a statement posted on Facebook, he expressed that as neighbors, Guyana is ready to offer assistance within its capacity. He conveyed his thoughts and prayers to the families affected by the earthquakes and the people of Venezuela, stating that Guyanese are “deeply saddened by the scale, magnitude, and destruction” caused by the natural disasters.

Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley also expressed her condolences after speaking with Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez. She stated that Barbados is ready to help Venezuela, emphasizing that while some may view the earthquakes as an act of God, the response must be characterized by humanity, kindness, solidarity, courage, and practical love. Mottley highlighted the importance of regional support, noting that pain does not stop at a border within the Caribbean family.

Reports indicate that the earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, resulted in at least 32 fatalities and approximately 700 injuries, with many buildings destroyed, particularly in Caracas and La Guaira state. Rescuers are currently searching through the rubble in the capital, where individuals have been heard calling for help. The earthquakes struck at 6:04 PM on Wednesday, coinciding with a national holiday in Venezuela, when many residents were at home.

President Ali reiterated that Guyanese stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people during this challenging time. The situation is further complicated by ongoing territorial disputes between Guyana and Venezuela over the Essequibo Region, with the International Court of Justice set to rule on the matter later this year or early 2027.
