A significant mechanical and logistical malfunction occurred during the climax of the 60th Diamond Jubilee Independence celebrations on Fort Island, Guyana, on Tuesday morning. The ceremonial Golden Arrowhead flag became stuck on the flagpole for over half an hour at midnight, impacting the event attended by thousands, including senior state dignitaries.
The malfunction forced organizers and military personnel to abandon the main flagpole and quickly hoist a smaller national flag on a secondary pole to allow the ceremony to continue while engineering teams worked to resolve the issue. The atmosphere on the island was celebratory following cultural presentations and a speech by President Dr. Irfaan Ali defending national sovereignty.
As the joint services contingent began the flag hoisting sequence, the rigging mechanism jammed, leaving the primary flag immobilized for more than 30 minutes. This disruption affected the broadcast schedule and was captured by numerous attendees on mobile devices, leading to widespread sharing on digital platforms.
Veteran broadcaster Bobby Vieira expressed disappointment over the incident, describing it as an avoidable breakdown in technical oversight. He emphasized that hoisting a flag of that size requires specialized engineering configurations, which differ from standard community flagpoles. Vieira noted that proper technical advice was not sought, which he deemed critical for such a significant national event.
He highlighted the distinct mechanics necessary for large-scale flags, explaining that they cannot be hoisted using standard ropes and must be configured with a weighted cable. Vieira also pointed out that past events had involved consultations with experts to ensure safe flag hoisting.
Calls for accountability have emerged, with Vieira suggesting that retired military personnel and technical officers from previous events should have been consulted to prevent such failures. He urged the administration to review the performance of the event coordinators, stressing the importance of experienced personnel for national milestones. As of now, government agencies and the Guyana Defence Force have not provided an official statement regarding the cause of the malfunction or any potential review of the event’s logistics.
