Guyana: Family Shocked After North Sophia Fire Leaves Seven Homeless

In North Sophia, Guyana, a fire has resulted in seven individuals becoming homeless after three homes were completely destroyed. Preliminary investigations by the Guyana Fire Service have concluded that the fire was maliciously set. The incident occurred at Lot 10 North Sophia, where flames quickly engulfed a cluster of residential structures, leading to significant loss of personal belongings and family homes.

Among those affected is Maurica Wellington, a mother of three, who lost her house and nearly all her possessions. Wellington expressed her concern regarding a male relative who is now under police supervision, stating that he exhibited unusual behavior prior to the fire, appearing unwell and withdrawn. She believes that he was not in a normal state of mind during the incident.

The loss has had a profound psychological and economic impact on the family. Wellington had dedicated years to providing for her children, who are currently in the midst of their national school examinations. Due to the destruction of their uniforms, textbooks, and school supplies, the children are unable to attend their exam centers. The family is now displaced and relying on the support of extended relatives for temporary shelter.

Robert Wellington, Maurica’s brother, shared similar concerns and noted that the family had been considering seeking medical and psychiatric help for the relative in question. He mentioned that the suspect had been complaining of severe physical pain and emotional distress earlier that day. Robert was away from the property when he received an emergency call about a motorcycle on the lot being set on fire, which quickly spread. By the time he returned, local residents were attempting to control the fire.

The Guyana Fire Service has confirmed that the fire was intentionally set, starting from a motorcycle parked on the premises and spreading to nearby structures. Firefighters responded with three water tenders and implemented containment measures to prevent the fire from affecting the surrounding neighborhood, but they were unable to save the core properties. Three homes were completely destroyed, and a fourth sustained significant damage. The suspect remains under investigation as criminal charges are anticipated.
