Guyana: Eyewitness Accounts Differ from Police Report in Teen’s Death

Questions are arising regarding the death of 16-year-old Aftaz King, as eyewitnesses have presented accounts that differ significantly from the Guyana Police Force’s narrative of the incident. This discrepancy has led to protests in the Corentyne area following the teenager’s death on Thursday evening.

The police report states that King was riding motorcycle CL 5607 along the Princeton Access Road around 6:45 p.m. when he allegedly attempted to evade a police patrol. According to the police, he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a utility pole, resulting in his death shortly after arriving at the No. 75 Regional Public Hospital.

However, eyewitnesses have claimed that the fatal collision occurred during an active police pursuit. One witness stated that King was riding at a moderate speed on a narrow street when he was chased by a police vehicle, which was reportedly traveling at high speed. This witness alleged that the police vehicle forced King toward the edge of the roadway, leading to the loss of control and subsequent crash into a roadside post.

The Guyana Police Force has not publicly addressed these allegations. Following the news of King’s death, community members expressed their anger by blocking roads and setting debris on fire, demanding clarity regarding the circumstances of the incident.

In response to the public outcry, the Guyana Police Force announced that its Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has initiated an investigation into the matter. The investigation will assess all aspects of the incident to determine if there is any criminal or disciplinary culpability among the officers involved. The police have also assured the family of the deceased and the public that appropriate actions will be taken if any wrongdoing is found.

With conflicting accounts now in the public domain, the results of the OPR investigation are anticipated to be crucial in clarifying the events leading to Aftaz King’s death.
