Guyana: Education Minister Visits David Rose School Following Abuse Video Incident

Education Minister Sonia Parag visited the David Rose School for Special Education on Thursday to meet with the parents and relatives of a student who was allegedly mistreated, as shown in a video that has sparked public concern. During her visit, she also met with the Head Teacher and other staff members as part of the Ministry of Education’s ongoing investigation into the incident.

Parag listened to the concerns raised by the affected family and assured them that the situation is being treated with urgency and seriousness. The Ministry’s Welfare Unit, Special Education Needs Department, and administrative team are now involved in the investigation process. The Minister emphasized that decisive action will be taken against anyone found to be involved in the incident, whether directly or indirectly.

She reiterated the Ministry’s zero-tolerance policy regarding abuse within the school system, stating that every child must be treated with dignity, patience, care, and protection while under the supervision of educational institutions. Parag highlighted the importance of providing a safe and supportive learning environment, particularly for children with special educational needs.

Additionally, Parag apologized to the affected families for the distress and pain caused by the incident. The teachers implicated in the matter are currently on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. The Minister indicated that they will face the full disciplinary processes available to the Ministry of Education, and there may be further legal consequences if deemed necessary.

The visit and subsequent statements come in response to public outrage over the video and increasing calls for enhanced safeguards, oversight, and accountability within special education institutions. The Ministry has committed to providing further updates as the investigation progresses.
