Thousands of community workers across Guyana have started receiving their increased monthly payments of $50,000, while higher stipends for about 1,000 local government representatives are expected to be paid within the coming days. The update was provided by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand, who said the government has delivered on its commitment announced in the 2026 National Budget. âWe had promised that we would increase your salaries, wages, stipends to $50,000 and we have done that. You have begun to get those increases all across Guyana,â the minister said. More than 20,000 pathway and community enhancement workers are benefiting from the increase, which the minister said will inject over $1 billion into households across the country. Meanwhile, Manickchand said the required approvals have been completed for increased stipends to Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and Regional Democratic Council (RDC) representatives, with payments expected shortly. Under the revised rates, NDC chairpersons will receive $50,000 monthly, vice-chairpersons $40,000, councillors $30,000, while RDC councillors will receive $50,000. âIn a matter of days, you will see that coming into your various NDCs and into your various homes,â the minister said. The increases form part of measures outlined in the 2026 National Budget aimed at strengthening local democratic organs and providing greater support for those serving communities nationwide.
