Guyana: Broomes Supports Dr. Campbell’s Proposal for Grand Coalition

Dr. Simona Broomes, leader of the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), has publicly supported a call made by APNU Member of Parliament Dr. Terrence Campbell for a grand political coalition aimed at unseating the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration. In an interview, Broomes, who previously served as a government minister under the APNU+AFC administration, highlighted that historical trends in Guyana suggest that a unified political front is the most effective strategy to challenge the ruling party.

Broomes pointed out that the practice of various political entities collaborating is well-established in Guyana’s electoral history, referencing alliances formed during the 2011 and 2015 election cycles. She believes these historical examples provide a framework for how a future coalition could function with increased transparency. “History will show that it was always a coming together of different parties and individuals to tackle the PPP government,” Broomes stated, emphasizing the potential for learning from past experiences to create a stronger and more transparent governance structure.

While advocating for the preservation of individual party identities, Broomes stressed the importance of focusing on cohesive governance that prioritizes national needs over partisan conflicts. The call for a new coalition comes in response to the current fragmented configuration of the National Assembly, where the PPP/C holds 36 seats, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) has 16 seats, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has 12 seats, and the Alliance For Change (AFC) has 1 seat.

Broomes recalled how previous parliamentary majorities have influenced the legislative balance of power, citing the 2011 period when an opposition-led majority curtailed executive overreach, leading to significant political developments. Initially, Broomes positioned the ALP as an independent movement focused on grassroots issues, including working-class rights and youth engagement. However, she has expressed a willingness to engage in discussions with established opposition parties such as the AFC, APNU, and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) to promote national cooperation. Broomes believes that a well-managed coalition could present a viable alternative to the current administration.
