Guyana: Brazilian Miners Report Robbery of Raw Gold and Other Items

Two Brazilian gold miners were reportedly robbed of 45 ounces of raw gold at their mining camp located in Sewanda Backdam, Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), according to the Guyana Police Force. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Monday, June 15, 2026, when the miners, aged 50 and 44, were attacked by four armed individuals.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were operating separate mining operations situated approximately 200 meters apart. The police stated that four masked males, armed with firearms, entered one of the operations while the 44-year-old victim and his workers were engaged in mining activities.

Reports suggest that the suspects held the victim and his workers at gunpoint, demanding that they complete the wash-down process. Subsequently, the suspects took 15 ounces of raw gold, GY$150,000 in cash, and one red ATV motorcycle, with a total value of GY$15,400,000.

Following this, the suspects proceeded to the second operation, where they similarly held the 50-year-old victim and his workers at gunpoint, demanding the completion of the wash-down process. They took 30 ounces of raw gold, a 20-pennyweight gold chain, a 20-pennyweight gold band, a 6-pennyweight gold ring, another red ATV motorcycle, and GY$300,000 in cash, amounting to a total value of GY$29,265,000.

Additionally, the suspects stole a quantity of clothing, groceries, and internet equipment before fleeing the scene. During the incident, the 50-year-old victim was reportedly assaulted and sustained injuries. The two ATVs were later discovered abandoned near the Puruni River. The police are currently seeking the suspects as investigations continue.
