Crime scene investigators are currently examining a residence in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, following a violent home invasion that resulted in the death of a seven-year-old boy and critical injuries to his 72-year-old great-aunt. The deceased has been identified as Adriel Aftab Mohamed, a student at Zeelugt Primary School. His great-aunt, Alima Itwari, who is a stroke survivor, is hospitalized with severe injuries.
The incident occurred early on Friday morning. It was discovered around 5:00 AM by Pastor Naseeb Mohamed, Itwari’s son, who received a call about screams coming from his mother’s home. Upon entering the house, he found his mother on the ground and his great-nephew lying motionless nearby, with a severe cut to his neck.
Emergency services were called, and Itwari was taken to De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where her condition was stabilized. Investigators cordoned off the property to gather evidence, recovering a bloodstained kitchen knife and documenting blood-stained footprints that may lead to the intruder.
Itwari provided a brief account of the attack, stating she was asleep when she felt a cold object against her neck. Upon waking, she saw a tall, thin individual who attacked her before turning on the child.
The motive for this attack remains unclear, raising concerns within the community. Pastor Mohamed expressed confusion over the violence, noting that his mother is not wealthy and has health issues. The Guyana Police Force has initiated a manhunt and is reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras to identify the suspect.
The community is in shock as they come to terms with the tragic events that unfolded in their neighborhood.
