Responding to recent criticism from the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) about the number of fatal police shootings during the ongoing State of Emergency, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro has staunchly defended his force. PCA director David West had voiced concern about the shootings, but Guevarro questioned the PCA’s silence during last year’s record murder toll when 625 citizens were killed, many by criminals. He emphasized that every police-involved shooting is independently reviewed, but his main priority lies in protecting law-abiding citizens and the officers sworn to do so. In the context of the State of Emergency, six men have been shot dead by police in separate incidents since its start on July 18th.
