Grieving Mother Dolphin Carries Dead Calf Across Ocean for Days

A heartbreaking scene captured by marine researchers has touched millions around the world after a mother dolphin was filmed carrying the body of her dead calf through the Indian Ocean for six consecutive days.

The dolphin, known to researchers as Fraggle, was observed gently balancing and nudging her two-week-old calf to the surface after it died. Throughout the ordeal, members of her pod remained close by, appearing to accompany and support the grieving mother as she refused to let go.

Marine scientists say this behaviour, known as epimeletic behaviour, has been documented in dolphins and other highly social cetaceans. Mothers have been observed carrying deceased calves for hours, days, and in some cases even weeks. While scientists cannot say with certainty that dolphins experience grief in the same way humans do, the behaviour is widely regarded as evidence of a strong maternal bond and an unwillingness to abandon their young immediately after death.
