Grenadian Students Lead Coastal Cleanup for Earth Day Celebration

Students from the Uganda Martyr Primary School demonstrated environmental leadership through a coastal cleanup at the Dragons Bay Marine Protected Area on World Earth Day. This initiative placed a focus on youth engagement in environmental protection and aimed to raise awareness about maintaining clean surroundings.

During the cleanup, students collected various debris, including bottles, clothing, and other waste materials along the shorelines. Their efforts not only transformed the beach visually but also instilled a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship. One student highlighted the consequences of littering, explaining how trash ends up in the ocean, affecting marine life and potentially leading to food shortages if fish populations decline.

The event underscored the crucial role of education in fostering environmental awareness. The children’s active participation emphasized that protecting the environment starts at the grassroots level. These young participants clearly conveyed the message that every action counts in safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

Arandal Dalan, Chairman of the Grenada Tourism Authority, praised the students’ dedication, noting that environmental care starts with local communities. He stressed the importance of maintaining pristine surroundings, not only for tourism but for the well-being of Grenadians themselves. “It’s about taking care of what is ours and having pride in it,” he stated, urging the public to responsibly dispose of their waste and protect community spaces.

The impact of the World Earth Day activity reaches beyond just a simple cleanup. It highlights the significance of instilling environmental values in younger generations and empowers them to lead by example. The children of Uganda Martyr Primary School echoed this sentiment, expressing their desire for peers to advocate for and maintain a clean and healthy environment.

Initiatives like these, driven by youth involvement, play a vital role in the broader effort to promote environmental preservation in Grenada. As the nation continues to face environmental challenges, such grassroots actions can inspire broader community participation and long-lasting change.
