Grandmother Killed by Stray Bullets During Home Shooting in Bahamas
NASSAU, Bahamas — A 48-year-old grandmother was fatally shot inside her home after stray bullets from a nearby armed chase penetrated the residence, striking her while she held her one-year-old grandson.
The victim, identified as Tamika Nottage-Cime, was inside her Wilton Street home on Monday night around 10 p.m. when the shooting occurred. Police said an armed man pursuing another individual opened fire in the area, with multiple rounds striking surrounding buildings, including her home.
According to police, several bullets passed through the walls of the residence and struck Nottage-Cime as she sat on a bed holding the toddler.
Her mother, Christine Nottage, who was also present, said the family had been spending a quiet evening together before the sudden eruption of gunfire. She recalled shouting for those inside the home to take cover as the shooting began.
When the gunfire stopped, she discovered her daughter unresponsive. The child in Nottage-Cime’s arms was found covered in blood but was not physically injured.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed that Nottage-Cime had died from a gunshot wound to the upper body. The gunman fled the area and remains at large.
Authorities said the child miraculously escaped injury despite being directly in the victim’s arms at the time of the shooting.
Nottage-Cime, a mother of six and janitress at DW Davis School, has been described by relatives as a quiet and devoted family woman. Her husband, who was working on another island at the time, returned home after receiving news of her death.
The shooting has drawn condemnation from community leaders, including Member of Parliament Jomo Campbell, who extended condolences to the family and called for an end to the cycle of violence.
Police say investigations are ongoing as they continue to search for the suspect responsible for the shooting.
