The Government’s attempt to replace the expiring State of Emergency with Zones of Special Operations (ZOSOs) has been thwarted in the Senate. The bill, requiring a special three-fifths majority to pass, was voted against by eight of the nine Independent Senators and all six Opposition Senators. The only Independent Senator who voted in favour was Senator Arthur McNish. The decisive vote took place around 8.40 pm on Tuesday night, ending in the bill’s failure.
