Defence Minister Wayne Sturge has announced the Government’s intention to reintroduce the Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) Bill, a controversial piece of legislation aimed at giving expanded powers to security forces in high-risk areas. Despite lacking support from the Opposition, the bill is expected to pass, with Sturge dismissing calls for amendments. Under the proposed law, special zones could be established for enhanced policing and security operations, targeting criminal networks and illegal firearms activity. However, the legislation has drawn criticism, with fears it could lead to abuses, unnecessary restrictions on citizens’ rights and undermine civil liberties. The bill has previously faced resistance in Parliament, needing support from independent senators to secure a special majority.
