Government Layoffs Spark Outcry and Food Aid Distribution in Trinidad and Tobago

On June 27th, the UNC-led government terminated over 300 contractors from CEPEP, URP, and Forestry, impacting an estimated 20,000 workers in Trinidad and Tobago. The lack of a clear explanation for these mass terminations has led to accusations of political victimization and a lack of transparency. In light of this situation, PNM MP Brian Manning intervened by distributing 60 to 70 food hampers to the affected workers, condemning the government’s actions as “political wickedness.” He criticized the administration for punishing the poor due to political motives. The layoffs have left numerous families without income, increasing reports of hunger and financial distress, alongside rising crime rates during the same period. Many CEPEP workers feel abandoned and betrayed, while PNM supporters have praised Manning’s quick response. The UNC government faces growing backlash from affected communities, with social media reflecting a mix of anger and demands for accountability. Manning poignantly stated, “People are starving. The government is playing politics with people’s livelihoods.”
