The Opposition is accusing the Government of potential abuse of power and infringement on citizens’ constitutional rights following the recent declaration of a state of emergency. This accusation was led by Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles during a news conference. The state of emergency was declared following a National Security Council meeting, spearheaded by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The Prime Minister declared the state of emergency in response to a rise in gang-related crime and credible intelligence about planned attacks on the protective services. Beckles expressed concerns about the regulations in the state of emergency notice and urged citizens to scrutinize them.
