Giornata dei Balneari, adesione record con 10.000 stabilimenti: commosso tributo a Fabrizio Valente e appello per il Made in Italy

**Record Participation in Italy’s “Giornata dei Balneari” Highlights Lifeguard Profession and Honors Fallen Colleague**

*August 30 2026 – Italy* – The annual “Giornata dei Balneari” (Beach Lifeguard Day) was marked on Saturday with a record‑high involvement of approximately 10,000 beach establishments across the country. The event, coordinated by the Italian Beach Lifeguard Association (SIB – Confcommercio), took place simultaneously in coastal regions from Puglia and Sardinia to Romagna and Calabria at 11:00 a.m.

The day’s program included a tribute to Fabrizio Valente, a 62‑year‑old lifeguard from Savona who died while rescuing a swimmer in distress off the coast of Andora. Antonio Capacchione, president of the national SIB Confcommercio, said Valente’s “extreme gesture” had “moved the entire nation” and described him as a symbol of courage and altruism.

During the ceremony, lifeguards from the participating establishments positioned themselves on their rescue boards, raised their oars, and sounded whistles to honor Valente and to remind beachgoers of the importance of following safety instructions.

The event also served to underscore the economic and cultural significance of Italy’s equipped beach tourism sector. According to the organizers, beach tourism accounts for 39.2 % of total tourist arrivals in Italy, and the country’s equipped beaches record the lowest drowning rates in Europe—approximately half the rate observed in Spain and France, and one‑eighth of that in Greece. Capacchione emphasized that the Italian beach model “constitutes a competitive advantage that the world envies.”

The “Giornata dei Balneari” is intended to raise public awareness of the role of lifeguards and to reinforce the safety standards that underpin Italy’s coastal tourism industry. The record participation this year reflects growing recognition of the sector’s strategic importance for the national economy and for preserving the country’s maritime heritage.
