The educational textbook titled Gaming 100 has been introduced to secondary school students in the Kingdom of Bahrain as an elective course. The curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to the video game industry, covering its historical evolution, technical development, design principles, and professional career paths.
The textbook is structured into five chapters comprising 24 topics. The first chapter, Foundations of Video Game Culture and History, traces the evolution of gaming hardware from 8-bit to 128-bit systems. It examines significant industry milestones, including the 1983 video game crash, the development of narrative-driven games like Metal Gear, and the historical presence of the Arab region in gaming technology, specifically referencing the Sakhr computer systems.
The second chapter focuses on game design and mechanics, utilizing examples such as Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy, Zelda, DOOM, Halo, and StarCraft to explain gameplay loops, user experience (UX), and user interface (UI) design. The third chapter, Building Games, shifts to technical implementation, covering game engines, programming basics, visual elements, and animation. This section emphasizes the collaborative nature of game development, a practical aspect demonstrated by students at Al-Naeem Secondary School for Boys, who successfully produced a video game based on the course material.
The fourth chapter, Games, Culture, and Society, explores the social and ethical dimensions of gaming, including esports, the impact of game content, and issues related to violence, addiction, and representation. The final chapter outlines professional career paths within the industry, detailing the various roles involved in development—such as writing, art, and project management—and the differences between independent and large-scale AAA studios.
By integrating technical, creative, and social perspectives, Gaming 100 aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of how video games are conceptualized, developed, and integrated into modern culture.
