Galera Point Lighthouse Closed for Structural Restoration

The Galera Point Lighthouse Facility, officially the (Keshorn Walcott lighthouse) a significant historical and cultural landmark in Trinidad and Tobago, has been temporarily closed to the public. According to the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, this closure has been initiated due to the structural unsoundness of the facility, marking it a potential safety hazard to visitors.

The decision to close the lighthouse was taken to prevent any potential accidents that could arise from falling debris, especially amidst adverse weather or natural disasters. This is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the public while necessary restoration works are undertaken to restore and secure the structure.

The Ministry has stated that it is actively communicating with the Maritime Services Division of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to assess the restoration timelines. The focus is on addressing safety concerns to facilitate the reopening of the lighthouse, which serves as a prominent tourist attraction.

The Ministry further assures that updates on the progress of the restoration and the subsequent reopening of the Galera Point Lighthouse Facility will be shared with the public when available. Through these efforts, the Ministry aims to preserve the lighthouse’s historical and cultural value while ensuring visitor safety.
