Minister for the Presidency Babirye Milly Babalanda has praised a youth group in Buwenge, Jinja District, for transitioning from political violence to productive enterprise. The minister spoke during a fundraising event for the DAFAT and NIMO Youth Development Group and Catering Services.
Babalanda stated that the group was previously involved in political violence in the area, including a fatal shooting incident during local council elections. She noted that she had engaged with the members following the incident to encourage them to pursue constructive activities. The group has since established a catering and development initiative.
During the ceremony, the minister conveyed greetings from President Yoweri Museveni and other government officials. She commended the Jinja District leadership for their focus on youth empowerment and urged the youth to utilize government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and the Youth Livelihood Program. She also emphasized the importance of vocational skills and discipline in achieving economic success.
Babalanda further cautioned the youth against drug abuse and encouraged women to pursue economic independence. She also urged parents to prioritize education over child labor in sugarcane plantations. To support the group’s efforts, the minister contributed 5 million shillings to their development initiative.
The event was attended by Jinja District Woman Member of Parliament Tibyaze Peace, as well as local security officials and community leaders.
