From teenage prospects to European moves: The changing paths of South Africa’s GQ footballers

Two years after being featured on the cover of GQ magazine’s Success Issue, five prominent South African football prospects have seen their professional careers diverge significantly. The group, which includes Relebohile Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko, Shandre Campbell, Jaedin Rhodes, and Mfundo Vilakazi, has transitioned from teenage talent to established professional players.

Four of the five players have secured moves to European clubs as they continue their development abroad. In contrast, Mfundo Vilakazi has remained in South Africa, where he is currently emerging as a key player for Kaizer Chiefs.

The career trajectories of these athletes highlight the varying pathways available to young South African footballers, ranging from immediate international transfers to continued development within the domestic Premier Soccer League.
