Former Carney adviser, CMHC head named inaugural chair of Build Canada Homes

**OTTAWA** — The federal government has appointed Evan Siddall as the inaugural chair of the board of directors for Build Canada Homes, its affordable housing agency.

Siddall is a former investment banker and public servant who previously served as CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) from late 2013 to 2021. During his tenure at the CMHC, he helped develop the Liberal government’s national housing strategy.

Most recently, Siddall worked as vice-chair at BMO Capital Markets. His career also includes heading the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) pension fund manager, as well as positions at Goldman Sachs and Irving Oil. Additionally, Siddall served for several years as a special adviser to Mark Carney during Carney’s tenure as governor of the Bank of Canada.

The federal Liberals launched Build Canada Homes nearly a year ago. In June, the agency transitioned into a Crown corporation, which requires governance by an independent board of directors.

According to a federal release, Siddall will exercise the board’s powers unilaterally until a formal process to appoint at least eight directors is completed.
