Venezuelan security forces have reportedly detained at least five Americans in recent months. These detentions, involving dual nationals and U.S. citizens with no known ties to Venezuela, come amidst escalating U.S. pressure on the Maduro government, involving military, economic, and diplomatic strategies. Among those detained is James Luckey-Lange, a 28-year-old from Staten Island, who was taken into custody in December while planning to return to the U.S. for Christmas. The Trump administration has yet to publicly confirm the identities or details of these detentions, and some of those held may be labeled as “wrongfully detained” by the U.S. State Department, a designation that can mobilize additional diplomatic resources to facilitate their release. Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela have been escalating, marked by a U.S. pressure campaign that includes expanded military operations, strikes on Venezuelan soil, and blockades of Venezuelan oil tankers. In response, Venezuela has accused the U.S. of attempts to destabilize or overthrow President Nicolás Maduro and appears to be using the detention of Americans as a negotiation tactic.
