FIFA to Investigate Post-Match Brawl After Spain’s World Cup Final Win Over Argentina

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the victory was overshadowed by chaotic post-match scenes as Argentina players confronted their Spanish counterparts.

Tempers flared immediately after the final whistle, with Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes at the center of the incident. Reports indicate Paredes grabbed a Spain player by the throat and shoved others before being shown a straight red card. Nahuel Molina also became involved, with punches and shoving breaking out among players and substitutes.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni entered the melee in an effort to separate players, while security personnel and coaching staff stepped in to prevent escalation. Television footage captured the unrest, which occurred after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal to secure Spain’s second World Cup title.

FIFA is expected to investigate the post-match violence, and disciplinary action could be taken against those involved. Several former players and pundits, including Gary Neville and Alan Shearer, criticized Argentina’s conduct, describing the scenes as ‘disgraceful’ and poor sportsmanship.

The incident threatens to overshadow Spain’s historic victory and could lead to suspensions for key Argentina players.
