The Nigerian Federal Government has announced that it is reviewing the 1978 Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The review is intended to help Nigerian airlines secure additional slots for transporting pilgrims during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, made the announcement on Thursday following a meeting with key stakeholders involved in Nigeria’s Hajj aviation plans. Keyamo explained that the review would focus on the terms of the 1978 agreement to identify opportunities for increasing the number of flight slots available to Nigerian carriers.
The move comes as Nigeria seeks to improve its capacity to accommodate the growing number of Nigerian pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia each year. By negotiating more slots, the government hopes to reduce travel costs and improve the overall experience for pilgrims.
