Father’s Anguish as Search for Missing Fishermen Enters Third Day

The search for two fishermen missing at sea since Friday entered its third day on Sunday, with a distraught David McLean Snr appealing for closure as the Coast Guard led efforts to find his son, David McLean Jnr, and Kester Alexander.

In an interview, McLean Snr struggled to compose himself as he described the toll on the families. “Everybody looking, everybody trying, the coast guard trying, we trying,” he said. “We went in the night and we just exhausted and everything. We went and tried again today and we hoped that we could find something but we just want some closure.”

McLean Snr said his son is a gentle boy and that going out to sea daily is normal for them because fishing is their livelihood. “I do it all my life,” he said, adding that the disappearance is a strange occurrence they are trying to understand. He suggested the men may have drifted after losing their anchor. “We are hoping that the anchor of somewhere that is what we’re searching for,” he said.

The Coast Guard is leading the search, with assistance from Venezuelan and American authorities. McLean Snr said he tried to move quickly but fears the men may drift out of range. “With all the ships, they have bulletins out so everybody’s trying,” he said. The families remain exhausted but hopeful for closure.
