Father and Infant Son Murdered in Early Morning Shooting in Dundonald Hill

The tranquility of Dundonald Hill, St. James was shattered early Wednesday morning when a father and his infant son were brutally gunned down. 25-year-old Joseph Sutton and his 11-month-old son, Jayden, became the victims of a horrific shooting. A stranger, yet to be apprehended, fired upon them through their bedroom window, leaving a mother and a community in mourning.

The victims were rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, but sadly, both were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. The incident has left the family’s matriarch, Leona Allen, grappling with the loss and the pieces of her shattered world. She suspects the attack was fueled by envy from within their community, as Sutton, a mini-mart owner, was known to have distanced himself from local criminal elements.

This tragic incident was not the first threat to Sutton’s life. He had survived a shooting attempt just months earlier, on March 16. Since then, the couple had been actively seeking to relocate, hoping to escape the escalating violence in their neighborhood. But their hopes were tragically cut short by this brutal attack.

The victims’ grandfather, Magnus Sutton, offered a grim perspective on the situation. He believes his son was murdered to prevent him from testifying about the previous attempt on his life, casting a shadow on the ‘see something, say something’ mantra encouraged by law enforcement. Amidst the sorrow, the family remembered the young Jayden as a playful child who had just begun to walk.

A somber scene unfolded at the crime location, with a trail of blood still visible, and investigators observed a nearby streetlight had been intentionally damaged, likely by the gunman to cover his escape. Officers from the Region I Homicide Bureau continue their search for clues, trawling the hill’s narrow paths.
