Fatal Jet Ski Incident Sparks Urgent Calls for Marine Safety Reforms in Tobago

In the wake of a tragic incident where a child was fatally struck by a jet ski, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine has confirmed that the Tobago House of Assembly and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service are actively investigating. The child, who was among family members enjoying the beach, was struck when the jet ski entered the bathing zone – an area supposedly off-limits to such vehicles.

Current regulations governing activities within the Marine Park have shown their limitations, as they do not carry the full weight of law. This restricts the ability of police to take immediate action against violators. Augustine emphasized the urgent need for stronger and more enforceable measures.

Citizens have reacted strongly to the incident, questioning why jet skis are allowed to operate so close to swimmers. Calls are growing for stricter regulations, improved enforcement, and greater accountability for operators who breach safety rules. Additionally, public pressure is mounting for authorities to make it harder for such vehicles to gain access to restricted areas.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the individual involved to come forward and assist with their inquiries. The tragedy has reignited the national debate on marine safety and underscored the immediate need for reforms to protect beachgoers across the country.
