Family Appeals for Aid for Caribbean Airlines Pilot Injured in Diving Accident

Nearly 14 months after a life-threatening diving accident in Tobago, Caribbean Airlines pilot Christon Battersby continues to fight for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at the Port of Spain General Hospital. On a fateful day in March 2025 at Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Battersby dove into the water and suffered severe injuries, including a broken neck, cardiac arrest, and near drowning. Despite receiving immediate CPR from tourists Sarah Persson of Sweden and Anna Hospedales of Canada, Battersby remains in a critical state.

After receiving initial treatment at Scarborough General Hospital, Battersby was transferred to the Port of Spain General Hospital for advanced care. During this time, his family has been tirelessly seeking ways to improve his chances of recovery. His mother, Sharon Vasquez Rochard, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise over US$400,000. This fund aims to facilitate access to specialized medical treatment abroad that they believe could significantly enhance Battersby’s recovery.

The family remains hopeful that with this overseas treatment, Battersby may regain independence from life support and perhaps one day return to his passion, aviation. The appeal has touched the hearts of many, sparking an outpouring of support from the aviation community, friends, and members of the public who have been moved by Battersby’s story and determination.
