Áfall fyrir Donald Trump og Vladimír Pútín

On 4 October, Brazil held its presidential election. Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva won the second round with 51.79 % of the vote, defeating former President Jair Bolsonaro, who received 48.21 %. This is the first time a candidate has won the second round after losing the first round. The results are seen as a blow to Donald Trump, who had hoped for a shift in support. The White House has not yet commented on the outcome. In Serbia, parliamentary elections were held on the same day. Alexander Vucic was re‑elected as president, securing a 12‑year term. The election also saw a significant student movement that challenged the ruling party, drawing attention to corruption and governance issues. Political scientist Eiríkur Bergmann said the outcomes are significant for both countries and have international implications. “Þetta hefur auðvitað mikla þýðingu fyrir þessi lönd,” he noted, adding that the results are a blow to Trump and to Vladimir Putin, and that the elections carry a broader geopolitical significance. The elections have implications for U.S. influence in South America and for Russia’s influence in the Balkans, as the new leadership in Brazil and Serbia may alter regional dynamics.
