Explosion rocks San Fernando plaza, leaving woman injured Monday evening

An explosion at a commercial building on High Street, San Fernando, sent smoke into the air and shattered glass onto the street on Monday evening.

The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. inside Skyline Pub, located on the third floor of R&M Plaza along the city’s main commercial street.

The force of the explosion shattered glass at the front of the upper floor, sending debris onto sections of the pavement and roadway near the Penal taxi stand, where commuters and taxi drivers were gathered.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and the building, along with a section of High Street, was cordoned off.

A tattoo artist who operates a business next to the pub said he was working on a customer when the explosion occurred. He suffered a minor scrape to his hand while leaving the building.

A woman was also injured by shattered glass and was taken to hospital after reportedly suffering an injury to her ankle.

The owner of the building, Kiran Singh, said the pub had already closed for business when the explosion occurred and that the incident was confined to the pub.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been officially established.
