Yesterday saw long queues at the Licensing Offices in Caroni and Port of Spain, as individuals rushed to renew their expired driving permits to avoid increased penalties. The rush follows a reminder from Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke about amendments to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, which now includes a late fee for permit renewal. Under the new rules, if a five-year driver’s permit has expired for less than six months, the cost for permit renewal remains at $500, but a late fee of $650 is now added, totaling $1,150. Many motorists expressed frustration over the long wait times, with some reporting they arrived as early as 6 a.m. but were unable to complete their transactions by 12.30 p.m. Commissioner Clarke acknowledged the issues and highlighted the new changes.
