Ex-Honduras President Wanted Again After Trump Pardon

Former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández is facing a new arrest warrant issued by Honduras’ attorney general, just days after he was freed from a US federal prison due to a pardon by President Donald Trump. The attorney general, Johel Antonio Zelaya Alvarez, has called for national authorities and Interpol to detain Hernández, who is wanted in Honduras for money laundering and fraud. Hernández, who served as the president from 2014 to 2022, was convicted last year in the US for drug trafficking and sentenced to 45 years in prison plus an $8 million fine. His release was a result of Trump’s controversial pardon. The charges he currently faces in Honduras are connected to ‘Pandora II,’ an extensive anti-corruption inquiry that has implicated several politicians, public officials, and business leaders. Hernández is accused of illicitly receiving around $2.4 million in kickbacks from public contracts to fund his 2013 presidential campaign. Efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the former president as the investigation continues.
