European Parliament members and civil‑society organisations have warned that the European Commission’s proposal to grant the EU border‑guard agency Frontex new powers to monitor social media could threaten freedom of expression. In a statement to Politico, the lawmakers and organisations said the plan would give Frontex a broad mandate to track online content that “helps or encourages illegal border crossing into the EU.” The proposal, released by the Commission on Tuesday, is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the coast and border‑guard agency. It would expand Frontex’s authority to surveil social‑media activity for information that could facilitate or encourage unlawful migration into the European Union.
