**Puerto Rico‑Based Party Calls on Energy Negotiated to Examine Effects of New Fortress Energy Bankruptcy**
*San Juan, Puerto Rico – August 31, 2026* – The Puerto Rican Independence Party (Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño, PIP) has formally requested that the Energy Negotiated (Negociado de Energía, NEPR) conduct a review of the potential repercussions stemming from the recent bankruptcy filing of New Fortress Energy on the island’s power‑generation firm Genera PR.
Denis Márquez Lebrón, the PIP’s spokesperson in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, sent a letter to the president of the NEPR on August 31, 2026. In the correspondence, Márquez Lebrón reiterated the party’s demand that the NEPR address “aspects that require clarification for the people of Puerto Rico” concerning the financial and operational implications of New Fortress Energy’s insolvency for Genera PR.
New Fortress Energy, a U.S.‑based energy company, filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. The filing has raised questions about the continuity of services, contractual obligations, and financial exposure for Genera PR, which is a key electricity generator in Puerto Rico. The PIP’s request seeks a comprehensive assessment of how the bankruptcy may affect Genera PR’s ability to supply power and any associated risks to the island’s energy infrastructure.
