Eguavoen to Lead Super Falcons Against Free-Scoring Comoros

Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Nigeria women’s national football team, the Super Falcons. The appointment follows the dismissal of former coach Justin Madugu, which occurred after the team failed to qualify for the upcoming Women’s World Cup.

Eguavoen, a former head coach of the Super Eagles, will lead the team during their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying matches against Comoros next month. The Nigeria Football Federation continues its search for a permanent head coach.

The coaching staff supporting Eguavoen includes Christopher Danjuma, the head coach of Nasarawa Amazons, who brings experience from his tenure with Nigeria’s youth national teams, including the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Olatunji Baruwa, who has previously worked with the Super Eagles and other national squads, will serve as the goalkeeper trainer. Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf, who represented Nigeria in multiple international tournaments including the 2008 Olympics, has also been named as an assistant coach.

The Super Falcons, who received a bye into the second round of the Olympic qualifiers, are scheduled to play Comoros in two legs at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13, 2026. Comoros advanced to this stage after a 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.

To qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Nigeria must navigate four rounds of two-legged knockout ties. Should they defeat Comoros, the team will progress to the third round in early 2027 to face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco. Subsequent rounds are scheduled throughout 2027, with the final qualifying stage set for November and December of that year.
