Dr. Ayda Kart Aşkar uyardı, kışın D vitamini eksikliği sedef ve egzamayı azdırabilir

Dr. Ayda Kart Aşkar, a dermatologist at Medicana Bursa Hospital, warned that reduced sunlight exposure during winter can lower vitamin D levels, potentially worsening skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and increasing hair loss. “Vitamin D is not only important for bone health; it also plays a critical role in the immune system, skin barrier function, and hair follicle renewal,” Aşkar said. “When sunlight is scarce, vitamin D levels drop, and many dermatologic flare‑ups become more frequent.” The doctor noted that psoriasis plaques can thicken, become more red, and produce more scaling when vitamin D is deficient. She added that eczema attacks often become more frequent and intense, with increased dryness and itching, when vitamin D levels fall. “The scalp, eyebrows, and nasal skin can also develop more pronounced oily scaling during winter, which may be linked to low vitamin D,” she explained. Aşkar emphasized that vitamin D deficiency can affect overall health. “Low vitamin D is associated with decreased bone density, bone pain, osteoporosis risk, muscle weakness, widespread muscle aches, mood swings, depression, anxiety, weakened immunity leading to frequent infections, and increased cardiovascular risk,” she said. To maintain adequate vitamin D levels, the dermatologist recommends controlled sun exposure and a diet rich in vitamin D. “Sunscreen should not be applied during short, 15‑20‑minute sessions on the face and arms, preferably around midday, three to four times a week,” she advised. Foods such as salmon, sardines, egg yolks, liver, and fortified dairy products should be included in the diet. She cautioned that vitamin D supplementation should be guided by blood tests and medical supervision. “Each person’s vitamin D needs differ, so supplements should only be taken after a healthcare provider checks serum levels,” she said. Aşkar concluded that monitoring vitamin D during winter is essential for managing chronic skin conditions and maintaining overall health.
