Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) General Secretary Thomas Letang stated that a peaceful protest held by doctors on Tuesday has led to productive discussions with the government. During a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s Office on October 14, 2026, Letang confirmed that doctors were granted a meeting with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to present their grievances directly. Letang characterized the meeting as a positive development and expressed optimism that the concerns raised would be addressed promptly. As part of the resolution process, a committee has been established to evaluate the challenges currently facing medical staff and to provide formal recommendations for improvement. Letang suggested that the swift implementation of these recommendations could prevent the need for further industrial action. The DPSU General Secretary highlighted systemic issues regarding the governance of the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH). He noted that the hospital’s transition from direct oversight by the Ministry of Health to an independent authority has introduced administrative and operational complexities. According to Letang, these structural changes have persisted for approximately five years, contributing to ongoing friction. While acknowledging that resolving these long-standing issues will require time, Letang emphasized that fostering a stronger, more collaborative relationship between the Ministry of Health and the DCFH is essential. He concluded by expressing hope that improved cooperation and timely government action will stabilize the working environment for doctors and resolve outstanding disputes.
