Efforts to stabilize the administrative backbone of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) have shifted into high gear. This follows an emergency visit by the Director of Personnel Administration (DPA), Corey Harrison. On March 26, a crucial meeting was held to address a growing staffing crisis threatening the island’s public service efficiency.
The current staffing bottleneck is largely a result of recent amendments to the Tobago House of Assembly Act. These changes have inadvertently created a vacuum in key leadership and administrative positions. The meeting focused on identifying immediate strategies to fill these vacancies and improve coordination between the DPA and the Assembly. This is aimed to ensure long-term HR stability.
In a departure from rigid formal protocols, the meeting was held in an informal setting. This allowed THA administrators and the Clerk of the Assembly to speak candidly about specific operational hurdles. Officials noted the importance of these open dialogues in building the necessary institutional relationships to navigate the current transition period.
The DPA’s presence on the island is part of a wider consultative mission. Along with the Teaching Service Commission, Mr. Harrison is conducting meetings with other vital sectors. This includes Denominational Boards and Parent-Teacher Associations. This collaborative push is a testament to the commitment from both Port of Spain and Scarborough to resolve the leadership crisis and reinforce Tobago’s public service capacity.
