Double the Rent: Mitjavila Tenants Forced to Sign New Contracts Under Housing Pressure

This report covers double rent: mitjavila tenants with key details and context.

Residents of three buildings on Avinguda Doctor Mitjavila in Andorra la Vella are facing rent increases of up to double the current price, as property owners seize on a tight housing market. Many tenants have signed new contracts, citing fear of finding even worse alternatives.

José Manuel, a retired man, will see his rent jump from about 500 euros to 1,000 euros starting in August. Combined with his wife’s income, they earn under 1,600 euros. ‘I’m holding on until my wife retires next year, then we’ll leave after 42 years in Andorra,’ he told Diari.

Other tenants, like Alexandra’s parents, saw their rent rise from under 600 euros to 1,050 euros with no renovations included. They signed after professional advice, realizing negotiation was their only option. ‘The only thing we could aspire to was to negotiate face-to-face with the owner,’ Alexandra said.

Another resident, Jéssica, accepted the increase as ‘reasonable given market prices’ and signed a five-year contract. The cases highlight a broader crisis: most tenants choose resignation over relocation in a market with limited supply and soaring prices.

The three buildings on Mitjavila, plus one in Escaldes, exemplify the pressure on renters. With weeks passing, resistance is fading as families, unable to find affordable alternatives, sign away their financial stability.
