Dog Struck by Van in Arouca Dies Following Rescue Efforts

A dog that became the centre of widespread public concern after being struck by a van in Five Rivers, Arouca, has died, according to an update from Mackenzi’s Rescues and Boarding.

The animal welfare group had become involved after video footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting outrage and calls for assistance for the injured dog.

Footage shared online showed the dog on the roadway as a van approached in the Five Rivers area. The vehicle struck the animal, which could be heard crying out following the impact before moving away from the scene.

The video quickly attracted attention across Trinidad and Tobago, with animal lovers questioning the circumstances surrounding the collision and expressing concern about the condition of the injured animal.

Mackenzi’s Rescues and Boarding subsequently appealed to the public for assistance, saying the dog needed help after being run over. Posts circulating alongside the rescue appeal indicated that the animal had suffered multiple broken bones and was being taken for veterinary treatment.

Despite efforts to help him, Mackenzi’s Rescues and Boarding has now reported that the dog has died.

The development has renewed sadness and anger surrounding the incident, particularly among people who had followed the dog’s condition after seeing the disturbing footage online.

The case has also reignited discussion surrounding the treatment of animals on Trinidad and Tobago’s roads and the responsibility of motorists when an animal is struck.

Animal rescuers regularly depend heavily on donations and public assistance to cover veterinary treatment, medication, transportation and other expenses associated with injured and abandoned animals.

For those who followed this case, hopes that the injured dog would recover have now ended with news of his death.

The incident nevertheless continues to generate calls for greater compassion towards animals and accountability whenever suspected acts of animal cruelty occur.
