Djibouti’s Heat Feels Like 46°C: The Hidden Danger of Humidity

Djibouti is in the grip of one of the hottest periods of the year, with temperatures hitting around 38°C across several regions. But the real story is the humidity. At nearly 80%, the moisture in the air pushes the ‘feels like’ temperature beyond 46°C, creating a serious health threat.

The combination of high heat and humidity is especially dangerous because it prevents the body from cooling itself through sweat evaporation. This can lead to heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and even death if precautions are not taken.

Health authorities are warning residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on elderly neighbors and children. The risk is highest for outdoor workers, who may have no choice but to continue laboring in these conditions.

As climate change increases the frequency of such extreme events, Djibouti’s population faces growing challenges. Public health officials urge everyone to take the invisible danger seriously and act to protect themselves.
