In early July 2025, Central Texas experienced a catastrophic flash flood along the Guadalupe River, following heavy rains that resulted in a staggering 11 inches of rainfall within just a few hours. The river rose dramatically, leading to immense destruction, particularly in the Hunt and Kerrville areas of Kerr County. Tragically, at least 52 lives were lost, including 15 children, with over 37 individuals still missing, notably a group of girls from Camp Mystic. Rescue operations have mobilized over 1,000 responders, employing helicopters, drones, and boats to assist nearly 1,000 people. Survivors described terrifying moments of escape, clinging to trees or rooftops while awaiting rescue. Camp Mystic, which covered more than 700 acres, faced severe damage, losing many of its cabins to the floodwaters. Local and state leaders, alongside federal support from the President, have vowed to aid recovery efforts. The flooding has disrupted community celebrations and sparked immense grief. Meteorologists attribute the disaster to a stalled weather system exacerbated by Tropical Storm Barry, which flooded the region rapidly. As search efforts continue in unstable weather, authorities are prioritizing the identification of victims and investigating the timeliness of flood warnings.
