El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has approved a special transitory law that will allow taxpayers in the country’s 44 municipalities to settle their municipal tax debts. The new legislation eliminates penalties and interest that have accrued on unpaid taxes and provides for payment plans that can extend until December 31 of the current year.

Under the law, residents and businesses will be able to pay the principal amount owed on their municipal taxes without the additional burden of fines or late‑payment interest. The payment plans offered by each municipality can be tailored to the debtor’s financial situation, but all plans must conclude by the end of December.

The measure is intended to help municipalities reduce arrears and improve public service delivery by encouraging timely payment of local taxes. It applies to all 44 municipal governments across the country and is designed to be a temporary, transitional solution until the fiscal situation stabilizes.

While the law does not specify the exact amount that each taxpayer must pay, it clarifies that only the principal tax liability will be required, with no extra charges for penalties or interest.
