Design Work Progresses For Three Regional Hospitals

Health Minister Simeon Brown announced that design work for the redevelopment of Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North and Tauranga hospitals has reached a significant milestone. The three facilities, which form Tranche 2 of the Regional Hospital Redevelopment Programme, are being delivered under Health New Zealand’s Health Infrastructure Plan.

Brown said the early concept images now give patients, staff and local communities a first look at the future buildings. “This is the next step in getting these three redevelopments underway, and it gives patients, staff, and their communities their first look at what these hospitals could become,” he said.

He highlighted that acute services are central to any hospital and that the new acute services building will house the busiest and most critical functions, including the emergency department, intensive care, maternity services, operating theatres and other acute care units. “Bringing these services together under one roof means shorter distances between them, faster access to critical care, and a better experience for patients and their families,” Brown added.

The reference concept design provides a common foundation for all three projects, which can then be adapted to meet the specific needs of each site and its community. The milestone follows years of work, including site master planning, design feasibility studies and site investigations, all of which have been completed.

Planning teams are now refining the business cases, preparing to move into the preliminary design phase and progressing site preparation activities. Funding announced in Budget 2026 will support design, site planning and preparatory works across all three sites while the business cases are refined.

“Our Government is fixing the basics and building the future. The work underway now lays the foundations for hospitals that will support patients, staff and communities for decades to come,” Brown said.

Details of the projects will continue to evolve as the individual business cases are developed. Final scope, design and delivery decisions remain subject to the relevant approvals and decision‑making processes.
