Defence Minister Wayne Sturge is preparing to take legal action against Opposition MP Marvin Gonzales following accusations that Sturge was financially supported by drug dealers and traffickers in his political ascent. The allegations, which Sturge vehemently denies, were branded as false, defamatory, and highly damaging to his reputation in a pre-action protocol letter sent by his attorneys on Monday.
The legal backlash stems from statements that Gonzales reportedly made during a political meeting in San Juan on June 3. These remarks, according to Sturge’s legal team, were broadcast live on the People’s National Movement’s Facebook platform, reaching a wide audience. Sturge is represented by Freedom Law Chambers, led by former Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, SC.
The legal team claims that the statements suggested Sturge is linked to criminal elements, compromised by illicit interests, and unfit to serve as both Minister of Defence and a Member of Parliament. They maintain that the allegations are completely untrue and have caused significant harm to Sturge’s character and standing in public life.
Sturge’s lawyers have demanded that Gonzales immediately retract the statements, issue a full and unreserved public apology, and remove any publications containing the allegations. In addition, they have requested that proposals for financial compensation be submitted within 14 days. Failure to comply with these demands could result in the initiation of legal proceedings in the courts.
