Debate Intensifies Over Police Posts vs. Mobile Patrols in Crime Reduction Strategy

The recent decision to staff 30 police posts with officers and soldiers has sparked debate over its effectiveness in crime reduction. Critics argue that this move detracts from the more effective strategy of mobile patrols, which offer high visibility and rapid response capabilities. Instead, millions of taxpayer dollars are being invested in setting up these posts, often located just a few kilometers from existing police stations.

The intended purpose of these posts, as explained by the Minister responsible for security, is to facilitate public interaction with police officers. However, this rationale has been met with skepticism. Critics point out that the real utility of police posts should lie in deterrence and quick action, not as places for casual conversation. Concerns are raised that crimes, such as drive-by shootings, could occur with offenders escaping long before officers at these posts can respond.

Reallocating personnel from these fixed posts to mobile patrols could significantly enhance police presence on the streets. With 30 posts, this reallocation could equate to as many as 120 extra patrol units across various divisions. This strategy could dramatically improve response times, with some areas potentially seeing help arrive in under five minutes during emergencies.

The decline in visible policing has coincided with the dismantling of effective systems like the Operational Command Centre and a robust 999 system. The absence of data-driven decision-making in locating police posts has been cited as a fundamental flaw in the current strategy. Questions are being raised about the leadership and direction of national security efforts, highlighting the need for a return to proven methods of crime prevention.

A call has been made to reinstate mobile patrol units, repair the 999 system, and ensure a visible police presence to rebuild public confidence. The argument is that effective crime deterrence comes from officers actively patrolling communities rather than being stationed at fixed locations.
